Alpaca launched its MCP server in 2025 and shipped the v2 rebuild on April 9, 2026. The server exposes 65 tools (stocks, options, crypto, market data) and defaults to paper trading (ALPACA_PAPER_TRADE=true), so agents can be tested with a free paper account before touching live money.

Risk controls: toolset filtering via ALPACA_TOOLSETS (including a read-only market-data-only option), API keys kept in environment variables only, and docs advising users to "Review AI-suggested orders before confirming." Works with Claude Desktop/Code, Cursor, VS Code, Gemini CLI, and PyCharm, locally or remote.
